Oil prices retreated from recent records Tuesday on monthly data showing a fall in Chinese imports of the commodity, while Asian shares mainly gained as banks were bolstered by further signals that the worst of the credit crisis might be over.

Overall trading was subdued, with the dollar edging higher before the release of U.S. retail sales data for April expected later in the day, as well as a speech from the U.S. Federal Reserve chairman, Ben Bernanke.
