UNITED NATIONS, May 14, 2008 (IPS/GIN) -- Women's groups and
political activists in both developed and developing nations are
increasingly pushing for "gender-responsive budgeting" as part of
their campaign for global gender empowerment.
Rawwida Baksh, a team leader of Women's Rights and Citizenship
at the International Development Research Center (IDRC) in Canada,
said this type of budgeting concept has been in currency since the
mid-1980s.
The Australian government was the first to introduce
gender-specific budgeting in 1984, followed by Canada in 1993 and
