HONG KONG, Dec. 20 (IPS) -- The possibility of a worsening
economic outlook in 1996 is of more concern to the Hong Kong
business community than the handover to Chinese rule in 1997.
Hong Kong's annual growth rate has fallen from 6.3 per cent in
1992 to about five per cent this year, and unemployment has risen
from two to three per cent in the same period.
Such figures would hardly represent a recession elsewhere, but
in Hong Kong they come after almost 15 years of strong, unabated
growth and virtually non-existent unemployment.
