FED: Murray-Darling a long-term challenge for Australia:Rudd

SYDNEY, July 3 AAP - The plight of the Murray-Darling Basin is a long-term challenge
for Australia and the federal government is determined to act, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd
says.

The issue is high on the agenda at today's Council of Australian Governments (COAG)
meeting in Sydney where Mr Rudd is meeting with state and territory leaders.

In March, the Rudd government broke a 14-month impasse to announce an interim deal
to save the basin, seen as a sign of the new era of cooperation between the federal, state
and territory governments.
