And I'm Renee Montagne. The G-8 Summit of the world's wealthiest nations got underway today in Japan. The meeting was supposed to be an important milestone towards a new worldwide treaty to slow global warming. But there's been little progress leading up to this annual meeting, which seriously complicates efforts to reach agreement on a new climate treaty that has as a deadline the end of next year. NPR's Richard Harris reports.
