Columbia Credit Union isn't the only credit union growing locally. Of 15 credit unions in Clark County, at least eight have seen strong growth since 1995.
There are several reasons. Credit unions are gaining members not just because of population and work force growth, but also by offering more products. They also have been able to keep loan interest rates low in the face of banking competition. And they have capitalized on consumer awareness brought about by the federal "field of membership" debate this year.
