After surviving one of World War II's bloodiest battles, Forrest C. Chase returned to Maine to build a home in Wells that he and his wife lived in for more than 60 years.
It was a project that seemed to sum up his life. Mr. Chase was working full time at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard when he built their Littlefield Road home.
He dug the home's foundation using his hands and a shovel, according to his son, Wayne "Butch" Chase of Wells.
