China's Central Bank Buys into UK Insurers

BEIJING, Aug 26, 2008 (SinoCast via COMTEX) -- The People's Bank of China, the central bank, is said to have taken an about one percent stake in Prudential, Britain's second largest insurance group, thus becoming one of the latter's top 25 institutional investors.

The stake, worth about GBP 134 million, is expected to help China reduce the depreciation risk of foreign currency reserves caused by changing exchange rate.

Apart from Prudential, the Chinese central bank is reportedly to have acquired a certain stake in another British insurer Old Mutual.
