`Cut import duty on hybrid cars'

LOCAL car distributors and importers want the government to halve the import duty on hybrid cars and give other incentives to help spur the use of fuel-efficient vehicles here.

Hybrid cars are now slapped with a hefty 260 per cent import tax, as opposed to zero import duty for Asean-made vehicles and 30 per cent from non-Asean countries. There are also excise duties of 60- 105 per cent for Asean and non-Asean cars, plus a 10 per cent sales tax.
