Fed: Reform teacher training, says Nelson

CANBERRA, Sept 1 AAP - Many teacher training faculties are little more than quasi-sociology
departments with very low standards for entry, the federal opposition says.

Opposition Leader Brendan Nelson said today the faculties are in desperate need of
reform, and university lecturers should also be required to teach in school classrooms.

"There are 34 education faculties in Australian universities, most are little more
than quasi-sociology departments," he told the Australian Industry Group national conference
in Canberra.

"Only four of those universities require any year 12 maths for entry.
