The City of Hackensack Fire Department has come a long way since 1871, when the State Legislature authorized its birth.

Horses no longer pull the rescue trucks and fire-fighters don't race out from the local blacksmith shop. The department also has evolved from volunteer to paid, today encompassing 99 uniformed members and 20 civilians.
