NSW: Howard govt wanted Haneef to see "writing on the wall"

SYDNEY, Oct 28 AAP - The Howard government allegedly hoped Mohamed Haneef would "see
the writing on the wall" and leave Australia voluntarily to avoid a diplomatic row, a
new document shows.

Dr Haneef's legal team has used freedom of information laws to obtain a copy of an
email written on July 12 last year, just 10 days after the former Gold Coast-based doctor
was arrested over suspected terrorist links.

The Australian newspaper said the email was written by senior Department of Foreign
Affairs and Trade official Zena Armstrong.
