CATTLE rearing must be initiated actively in Malaysia to reduce the country's beef trade deficit, which is at RM850 million a year.

Malaysians consume 140,000 tonnes of beef a year, of which 22 per cent is sourced locally. The country depends on the import of meat from India, Australia and New Zealand.
According to the national beef and mutton blueprint, domestic demand for cattle meat should jump to 153,600 tonnes in 2015 with 63,300 tonnes produced domestically if the 40 per cent self- sufficiency level is achieved.
