Wall Street turned lower on Tuesday afternoon, one day after posting its biggest gains in five months in response to details of the Obama administration's financial rescue plans.
The Dow Jones industrial average, which surged nearly 500 points on Monday and was flat earlier in the day, was down 50 points, or 0.7 percent, in afternoon trading. The broader Standard & Poor's 500- stocks index was down 1 percent.
