MALAYSIA'S fledgling kenaf industry in Kelantan and Terengganu will receive a boost from the United Nations to test out industrial and commercial use of this new commodity.
Kenaf, scientifically known as Hibiscus cannabinus, is a warm- season annual fibre crop related to cotton, okra and hibiscus.
The plant, which can reach a height of 5m in four months, is harvested for its stalks from which the fibre and woody core are extracted for use in bank notes, ceiling boards, wall panels, geotextiles and bullet-proof vests.
