Shares in Spanish banks sank Monday after the government announced its first significant bank bailout in 16 years and fueled worries that other financial institutions might need to be rescued.
The Bank of Spain said Sunday that it would take over management of Caja de Ahorros Castilla-La Mancha, a regional savings bank, and inject liquidity into the bank, backed by government loan guarantees of up to euro 9 billion, or $11.8 billion.
