Qld: Bunch of opponents to banana decision

BRISBANE, March 4 AAP - A national supermarket chain has joined the Queensland government
and growers in criticising a decision to allow bananas to be imported into Australia from
the Philippines.

Biosecurity Australia on Tuesday declared that imports of bananas will be allowed provided
quarantine measures are undertaken in the Philippines.

The IGA chain of 1,270 supermarkets said on Wednesday it would not stock bananas from
the Philippines while local supplies were available.

IGA chairman Mick Daly said it would lobby the Australian Quarantine and Inspection
Service (AQIS) to knock back ...
