THEY were like those huge cumbersome heavy-duty hard-on-the- wrist typewriters that made such an impression when they were introduced.

While typewriters have become obsolete with the introduction of computers, spectacles are not quite finished yet, even as contact lenses are slowly but steadily gaining ground.
The first contact lenses were the hard-type (PMMA) ones and they became obsolete with the introduction of soft lenses in 1971.
