Henry F. Thumann Sr., the German-born founder and president of meat processor Thumann's Inc., whose cold cuts and other provisions are a staple in deli cases nationwide, died Wednesday.

The Rutherford resident was 98.

Mr. Thumann, a butcher by trade, immigrated to the United States at age 17. After working as a distributor for Boar's Head, another venerable name in the deli business, he founded his company in Wallington in 1949, starting with two trucks and five employees.
