HAIL CAUSES JUNE WHITEOUT -- Unusual storm whips through region

A powerful thunderstorm tore across North Jersey on Monday, dumping hail in such abundance that parts of Bergen County looked as though a springtime snowstorm had rumbled through.

Snowplows that had sat idle since March were pressed into service in Emerson, Westwood, Ridgewood and elsewhere to clear penny-size hail that piled inches high in streets and municipal parking lots.

A Washington Township police cruiser got stuck in the hail and had to be plowed free, said Capt. ...
