Vic: Govt should create jobs in Ballarat as mine sheds jobs: AWU

MELBOURNE, July 21 AAP - The Victorian government must act to stimulate the economy
in the Ballarat region after the loss of 200 jobs at the city's Lihir gold mine, a union
says.

The Papua New Guinea-focused gold miner says it will pursue expressions of interest
to buy the mine, after determining the operation's future output will fall short of its
targets.

Lihir said underground development activity at the mine had been reduced and total
