Twenty minutes after Neil Armstrong becomes the first man to walk on the moon, he is joined by Buzz Aldrin. Aldrin, born and raised in Montclair, dubs what he sees "magnificent desolation." Photographs of Aldrin planting the American flag on the moon become a cultural icon. Of the 12 men to tread the lunar surface, Aldrin is the only Garden State native.
