Bigger payouts for directors despite economic woes

COMPANIES listed on the local bourse were much more generous with its directors last year than in 2007, despite the economic woes which hit the country in the second half of the year.
Close to 230 top directors received RM1 million and more in 2008, compared with 194 in 2007.
In its annual survey of the "Highest Paid Directors", Malaysian Business revealed that the top 50 companies in terms of total payouts, forked out RM553 million in 2008 for its directors.
For the top 10 companies alone, the payout was nearly RM300 million.
