WA: Juveniles excluded from mandatory sentencing laws

PERTH, Aug 20 AAP - Juveniles under the age of 16 who assault police officers will
not be subject to Western Australia's proposed mandatory sentencing laws, after the government
bowed to pressure to exclude them.
WA Attorney-General Christian Porter says he has agreed to calls by the Greens and
Labor opposition to amend the bill, which prescribes mandatory jail sentences for people
convicted of assaulting police.
Under the changes likely to be passed during the current session of parliament, the
mandatory sentences will only apply to offenders aged 16 and over.
