He was a wild lefty from Midland Park who made baseball history in 1938. Johnny Vander Meer was a 23-year-old rookie with the Cincinnati Reds when he pitched back-to-back no-hitters. He beat the Boston Bees on June 11 at Crosley Field in Cincinnati. Four days later, he defeated the Brooklyn Dodgers before 38,000 fans in the first night game at Ebbets Field.
The games made Vander Meer a legend, but "The Dutch Master" never forgot his hometown, providing money for scholarships for local youngsters.
