This is WEEKEND EDITION from NPR News. I'm Liane Hansen.

This week, the Senate Finance Panel takes up its long-awaited health care bill. This is the last of five congressional committees to draft a makeover of health care. It got bogged down while three Republicans and three Democrats — the so- called Gang of Six tried to come up with a bipartisan proposal. But, in the end, no Republicans endorsed the plan.
