In 1982, an art critic with the New York Times wrote of an exhibition by artist Maurice Freedman, "There are paintings in this show that deserve to go straight into any history of American painting in this century."

Freedman - who grew up in Boston, lived in New York and painted in Maine - was still alive when those words were written, although he died just a few years later, in 1985. He didn't live long enough to see his paintings enter the art history books.
