GEORGETOWN, Jan. 25 (IPS) -- Rum producers in the region are
looking to their governments to help settle their latest quarrel
with several European countries.
Until last week, the major producers from across the Caribbean
were relishing a late 1995 European Union (EU) decision to lift
quota ceilings and scrap duties on Caribbean light rum exports.
The quota removal came after lobbying from regional countries
for the EU to raise the 244,000 hectoliter annual quota as the
European demand exhausted that amount in only six months.
