FED: Australian scientist wins Nobel Prize for medicine

MELBOURNE, Oct 5 AAP - Australia's first female Nobel laureate knew she was on to something
big when her research team discovered an enzyme - and with it hope for future cancer treatments.
Professor Elizabeth Blackburn, 60, was announced the 2009 Nobel Medicine Prize winner
on Monday, along with Carol Greider and Jack Szostak of the United States, for their major
breakthrough in discovering the enzyme known as telomerase that assists chromosomes in
cells to stay eternally young.
The cell biologist, a dual citizen of Australia and the US, graduated with degrees
