Vic: Backburn put firefighters' lives in peril: commission

By Michelle Draper

MELBOURNE, Oct 6 AAP - A backburn carried out near Marysville put the lives of firefighters
in peril, the Teague royal commission into Victoria's Black Saturday bushfires has heard.

The backburn was conducted just 15 minutes before a wind change pushed a separate,
massive fire through the town.

The crews were forced to retreat to Gallipoli Park in Marysville, where they were lucky
to survive, counsel assisting the commission, Melinda Richards said.

The fire that started at the Murrindindi saw mill about 3pm on February 7 claimed 38
lives - 34 in Marysville alone.
