Midday Round-Up: HIGHLIGHTS OF THE AAP RTV FILE AT 1130
Rates Swan (BRISBANE)
Federal treasurer WAYNE SWAN says the banks shouldn't raise interest rates more than
a quarter of a percentage point .. the same as the rise announced by the Reserve Bank
yesterday.
The central bank raised its official cash rate from a 49-year low of three per cent to 3.25.
Meanwhile .. the opposition has called on the government to wind back its stimulus
spending for school upgrades and infrastructure.
Deputy opposition leader JULIE BISHOP says if the government doesn't stop its stimulus
.. it'll push rates up fast.
