KUALA LUMPUR: Child abuse by parents and guardians is on the rise, with the number of cases going up from 992 in 2007 to 1,266 last year.

Expressing concern, Women, Family and Community Development Minister Senator Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil said every member of a family and community must be responsible for protection and safety of children.
"Parents and guardians are supposed to protect and safeguard children against abuse but, instead, they themselves are abusing them."
