IN a precedent-setting display of weapons technology, Israel and the US used a laser Friday to destroy a live short-range Katyusha rocket in flight, culminating nine months of testing the joint Nautilus program, US officials said.
Officials said a high-energy laser focused on an Israeli rocket for some 15 seconds, resulting in the explosion of the warhead and its destruction. On Tuesday, the laser succeeded in intercepting a Katyusha rocket without a warhead.
A Pentagon official said the significance of Friday's test was that it was "the first time that a warhead was exploded in flight by any developmental or operational weapons ...
