Why do so many Jews have heart disease?
At least once a week a child or grandchild of one of my patients will ask this question. The question is based on our common experience. Coronary heart disease is the number one cause of death of Jewish men over the age of 40 and Jewish women over the age of 50, as it is in the general population. With each year that we age, the likelihood that we will develop heart disease increases, as does our risk of having a heart attack -- often without having been aware that there was anything wrong with our heart.
