Killer whales decimating sea otters

SANTA CRUZ, Calif., Oct. 15 (UPI) _ Researchers are reporting killer
whales are causing an unprecedented decline in the population of sea
otters in western Alaskan waters, causing a destructive shift in the
ecology throughout the region.

It's a shift that may have been triggered by overfishing, researchers
said.

The developments, as described in Friday's issue of the journal
Science, describe how the whale-sea otter food chain was upset when one
rung in the chain was disturbed. The killer whales are going after the
otters because the seals and sea lions are in short supply in the North
Pacific.
