Columbia River's aspirations to go unbeaten and capture the Washington Class 4A football title came crashing down Saturday night in the ugliest of ways.
Puyallup beat the Chieftains, the state's No. 1 Class 4A team, with Kevin Hughes' 34-yard field goal in the first half and hanging on to the three-point lead until zeroes went over the scoreboard at Kiggins Bowl.
It was Puyallup 3, Columbia River 0 in the opening round of the Class 4A football playoffs, a game decided in the final minute.
