BANGKOK, Dec. 16 (IPS) -- Chinese swimming star Shan Ying, a
winner at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, sprained her ankle during a
competition at the 13th Asian Games here in Thailand. But she took
pain killers and went on to win the gold in the 50-meter and
100-meter freestyle.
Such is the intensity of the battle for gold in swimming between
the powerful Chinese and the resilient Japanese that not even
injury can get in the way.
The Chinese swimmers came to defend their crown as Asia's
leading swimming nation after having won 15 golds at the last Asian
