AHMEDABAD, India, Dec. 28 (IPS) -- Groups of street vendors from
across the country have joined together to form a national alliance
to pressure the Indian government to create laws that protect their
rights.
Street vendors, many of them women, are ubiquitous in India.
They work tirelessly to eke out a living from small businesses on
the footpaths, but they are invisible as far as the authorities are
concerned.
Official census surveys have largely ignored them, though their
numbers probably run into millions across the country. Street
