A crew of 19 specially trained Maine firefighters was expected in Florida
early this morning as part of a national response to the wildfires ravaging
that state.
The Maine crew was scheduled to leave by bus for Manchester, N.H., at
midnight last night and fly out at 3 a.m. today for a staging area in Ocala,
Fla. The crew joins three Maine Forest Service wardens. Its members will spend
two or three weeks on the fire lines.
The call for assistance came Friday as no surprise to John Benoit Jr., a
South Portland firefighter who lives in Brunswick.
