Advocates for the mentally ill complained this week that a $400,000 annual
state contract to provide support to families of people with mental illness -
now held by the Alliance for the Mentally Ill of Maine - unfairly limits
competition by other groups.
This is the first time the contract has been subject to public bid. State
mental-health officials said Gov. Angus King insisted that most state
contracts be offered for bid to get the best possible deal.
