New Hampshire Sen. to seek White House
CONCORD, N.H., Jan. 2 (UPI) _ Bob Smith, a two-term conservative
Republican U.S. Senator, says he will file papers next week to
officially become a candidate for president in 2000.
The 57-year-old Smith, from Tuftonboro, says today he has been well
received during exploratory trips to some 20 states around the country,
including Iowa which has the nation's first caucuses and his home state
of New Hampshire, which has the important first primary.
He says he plans to focus the early part of his campaign Iowa and New
Hampshire, trying to fashion a grass roots movement.
