NORFOLK, Va. (AP) _ Adding another medicine to the traditional two-drug treatment for severe childhood asthma attacks substantially reduces the need to hospitalize sufferers, according to a study published today.
Researchers examined the effect of adding ipratropium bromide to the standard emergency room therapy for asthma attacks, albuterol and steroids.
The result was a 28 percent drop in the need for hospitalization, according to the study in today's New England Journal of Medicine.
The combination therapy also was helpful in less severe cases, but the benefits were less dramatic.
