BEIRUT, Lebanon (AP) _ When Emile Lahoud was appointed army commander during Lebanon's civil war, he had no office, no command and little power.

Today, nine years later, Lebanon's divided army is united and in charge of national security, discipline has been restored and Lahoud's command is undisputed.

That is what Lebanese fed up with corrupt politicians hope Lahoud will bring to the presidency. He is virtually certain to be elected head of state by Parliament on Thursday.
