BEIRUT, Lebanon (AP) _ Riding on popular support and armed with crucial Syrian backing, Emile Lahoud was elected Lebanon's president by parliament Thursday in a step that many hope will lead to government reform.

All 118 lawmakers present voted for Lahoud, the nation's army commander, cutting across traditional sectarian lines in this religiously charged nation of 3.2 million people.

But he will face an entrenched political system marked by the favoritism and religious division that he is said to despise.
