NEW YORK (AP) _ Two months after proposing a deal that drew fire from privacy experts, American Express Co. canceled a partnership with a database marketing firm that would have made their services available to American Express merchants.

The credit card issuer cited concerns about profitability in scuttling the deal, not privacy issues. American Express spokeswoman Gail Wasserman would not say how much the company had hoped to earn from the venture with KnowledgeBase Marketing.
