Article: Clinton threatens veto of budget if it lacks jobs, education programs

CHEVERLY, Md. (AP) _ Recalling his own experiences in summer jobs funded by the federal government, President Clinton today promised to veto any budget from Congress that lacks funds for summer jobs and education programs.

Clinton commended a group of summer employees at Prince George's Hospital Center, saying the $871 million program that provided their jobs had given them a large push toward a positive future. A budget proposal being advocated by Republican lawmakers would cut that program, and restructures as block grants money for others such as Head Start, after-school programs and tutoring efforts.
