Article: Dollar, Tokyo stock prices fall

TOKYO (AP) _ The dollar fell against the yen Friday amid speculation financial authorities may intervene to support the ailing Japanese currency. Tokyo stock prices followed Wall Street lower.

The dollar bought 144.84 yen as of mid-afternoon, down 1.72 yen from late Thursday in Tokyo and below its late New York rate of 145.16 yen.

On the Tokyo Stock Exchange, the benchmark 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average fell 258.09 points, or 1.68 percent, to close at 15,123.93. On Thursday, the Nikkei index edged up 3.05 points, or 0.02 percent.

Traders said the dollar carried over from its weakness in New York, where the currency moved lower overnight on profit-taking ...
