Benefits bill for workers advances

SACRAMENTO, July 29 (UPI) _ Part-time California workers would get cash
equivalents of full-time benefits, depending on their hours, under
legislation awaiting final action in the state Assembly.

The Senate passed the bill earlier this year, and it cleared the
Appropriations Committee today.

Sen. Hilda Solis, D-El Monte, says it was inspired by the United Parcel
Service strike, where part-timers called attention to the benefit
disparity issue.

The bill would apply only to private employers with 20 or more
employees, and exempt government.

Solis says only about 100,000 of the state's 900,000 ...
