EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) _ New Jersey Devils management wasn't happy after two straight playoff failures, there were hints some players were unsettled with Jacques Lemaire's system, and some in the media were calling for his firing.

After making his own evaluation of the situation, Lemaire averted a possible firing and resigned as coach of the Devils on Friday.

The resignation came less than a week after the Devils were eliminated in the playoffs by the Ottawa Senators, becoming only the third No. 1 seed to be ousted by a No. 8 seed since the NHL went to its current postseason format.
