WASHINGTON (AP) _ The White House rejected pleas by conservative and human rights groups Wednesday that President Clinton refuse to open his state visit to China in Tiananmen Square, site of the bloody crackdown against pro-democracy advocates in 1989.
White House press secretary Mike McCurry said Tiananmen Square is the White House equivalent of the South Lawn as the formal location for welcoming foreign leaders.
To refuse to go to Tiananmen Square would send the message that ``we are going to `diss' you in a very major way,'' contrary to Clinton's efforts to foster better relations, McCurry said.
